Small Groups- opportunities for the depth of discipleship
It is our belief at PCM that in order to do ministry well we need to take seriously the commitment to smaller more intimate encounters where our students can pray, support, study, and be accountable to one another in ways that will make their years at Carolina much more meaningful. As much as we hope our Thursday night program and fellowship will be done with excellence and engagement, we know that it is easy to get lost in a larger group of people. This is why we have taken a renewed commitment to developing small groups at PCM that will aim to meet these needs and goals in ministry.
Our Current Groups:
1) John Rogers (Campus Minister) and Catherine Mckenas; Catherine is a PhD student in Chemistry Department (working on developing materials that harness energy from sunlight...) and is a Texas native. Catherine is a graduate of Austin College in Sherman, TX. Catherine is a member of University Presbyterian Church. This group is supported by our Lilly Endowment funded program for vocational discernment and is called, "Guide My Feet." For the fall this group will be looking at the prayers of Flannery O'Connor (prayers that she wrote in her journal while a college student in Iowa). This group meets on Tuesday nights from 7:45-8:45PM. Their theme this year stems from a study of the gospel of Mark, "I Can't Be Silent."
2) Mac Gilliland and Jessime Kirk; Mac is a PhD student in the UNC Chemistry Department and a member of University Presbyterian Church. He did his undergraduate at Davidson College, loves good music, and enjoys leading a small group for our students at PCM. Jessime is a grad student at UNC in the field of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Jessime and his wife, Laura, are members of University Presbyterian Church.
3) Chelsey McElwee and Patty Baum; Chelsey did her undergraduate studies at Elon University and is currently in the UNC School of Education doing a masters in education. She is a local elementary school teacher. Patty works in the UNC-CH office of admissions and is an alumnus of Carolina. They have a lot of fun with our PCM students and love a small group ready to laugh, learn, and pray together. Both Chelsey and Patty are members of University Presbyterian Church. Their group meets on Tuesday nights from 8-9PM.
4) Kris Parks and Trina Rogers; Kris is a local attorney who is excited to be involved with our student ministry at PCM. Kris went to undergraduate at Carolina and law school at Wake Forest. Kris, along with her husband, Dallas, and two daughters are members of University Presbyterian Church. Trina is married to our campus minister, John. Trina is probably more comfortable wearing her Wahoo Orange as she has two degrees from the University of Virginia, but is growing more fond of Chapel Hill (though never as much as her beloved Charlottesville). Trina is a member of University Presbyterian Church.
5) Matt Moorman; Matt is our ministerial intern this year and a student at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte, NC. Matt and his wife, Emily live in Cary. We are excited to have Matt with us this year!
